Zora’s Story

When Zora, a well-loved lesson horse, struggled with recurring summer sores, JumpStart® antimicrobial wound dressing helped support faster healing and get her back to doing what she loves.

Zora plays an important role at Bogginfin Farm in Fort Myers, Florida, where she is a favorite among riders. But like many horses in warm climates, she regularly dealt with a frustrating and recurring problem.

A Recurring Challenge

“Zora experiences what we call ‘summer sores’ fairly often,” said Emma Morse, DVM.

These sores can begin as small wounds but may worsen overtime, especially when exposed to bugs and moisture. For horses like Zora, consistent wound care is critical—but not always easy to maintain.

“We had been keeping Zora’s sore covered and using on it previously, but it had been a long healing process,” said Frankie Wood, Zora’s trainer at Bogginfin Farm in Fort Myers, Florida. “Every time the wound became uncovered for any reason, it regressed to how it was before.”

Because Zora is frequently used for lessons, keeping bandages in place long enough for proper healing proved to be an ongoing challenge.

Trying a New Approach

“I heard about JumpStart antimicrobial wound dressing through Dennis O’Keefe, who works at Arthrex,” Frankie said. “His sons take riding lessons with me and have ridden Zora.”

After learning about Zora’s condition, Dennis connected with the Arthrex team to explore whether JumpStart dressings could help support healing.

Soon after, Dennis and the local Arthrex Vet Systems representative brought JumpStart bandages to the farm.

A Noticeable Difference

After beginning treatment with JumpStart dressings, Zora’s wound care began to improve.

“I’m very impressed with how JumpStart has helped Zora,” said Frankie. “Before using JumpStart, the wound care and bandage were basically just maintaining the sore and making sure it didn’t get worse. Now, I see immediate healing every time we change the wound dressing, even if the bandage has started to come off.”

With improved healing progress, Zora’s sores began to resolve more effectively than in previous seasons.

Back to What She Loves

As her wounds healed, Zora was able to return to her routine at the farm without the same level of irritation and discomfort.

After seeing Zora’s results, the Bogginfin Farm team began using JumpStart dressings with other horses as well.

Supporting Wound Healing in Horses

Despite the challenges of maintaining wound care in an active horse, Zora’s healing progressed more consistently with the addition of JumpStart dressings.

By supporting the body’s natural healing process and helping protect wounds, advanced dressings like JumpStart bandages may help:

  • Promote a healthier healing environment
  • Support progress even when bandages are disrupted
  • Improve comfort during recovery

For horses like Zora, this approach can help support healing and a return to daily activity.
