The Young Bobcat’s Story

When a young bobcat was found injured on the side of the road, a coordinated rescue effort and advanced surgical care helped give him a second chance in the wild.

The bobcat, believed to be less than a year old, had been hit by a car near the CREW Wildlife and Environmental Area in Southwest Florida. He was found and brought to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, where the veterinary team quickly began stabilizing his condition.

Emergency Rescue for Injured Bobcat

“It happens far more often than we want it to,” said Kendall Carlin, DVM, a veterinarian with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida’s von Arx Wildlife Hospital. “Thankfully, a good Samaritan scooped him off the side of the road and brought him to the conservancy.”

Examination revealed multiple injuries, including a fracture of the left front leg and damage to several digits on the right front paw.

The team provided emergency care, including oxygen, pain management, and stabilization, before transferring the bobcat to BluePearl Pet Hospital in Fort Myers for surgical treatment.

Emergency Surgery for a Second Chance

“This young bobcat came to us with an acute fracture, which we reduced and then stabilized using a seven-hole straight plate and screws from the OrthoLine™ fracture management system that Arthrex donated,” said Lauren Aldrich, DVM, DACVS-SA, with BluePearl. “We amputated the three injured digits to give the bobcat the best chance to be able to recover, walk, and hunt again.”

Fracture stabilization is critical in cases like this, helping restore limb function and protect the injury as it heals. For wildlife, successful repair is especially important—not just for comfort, but for survival after release.

Recovery After Fracture Repair

Following surgery, the bobcat returned to the von Arx Wildlife Hospital for initial recovery before being transferred to the South Florida Wildlife Center.

There, he spent several weeks in a specialized outdoor enclosure designed to limit human interaction while allowing safe healing and gradual return to movement.

This controlled environment helped ensure the bobcat could recover strength and mobility while maintaining the behaviors needed to survive in the wild.

Back to the Wild

Once fully healed, the bobcat was released back into his natural habitat near where he was originally found.

“This rescue is a powerful example of what’s possible when our community comes together for wildlife,” Dr. Carlin said. “We are grateful to our supporters and partners who helped give this bobcat a second chance at life.”
